Moore enlisted on July 26, 1967 in the Army of the United States, and he started Basic Combat Training on August 3, 1967 in Jackson, South Carolina. He continued on to do his Advanced Individual Training in Fort Polk, Louisiana and started on October 2, 1967. By December 1, 1967, George has now finished basic and advanced training and is enroute to USARPAC. George Washington Moore served in the branch of the United States Army/53 670 777. His rank was Sergeant and served July 26, 1967 to April 11, 1968 up until his death; he was killed in action. The unit Sergeant Moore served as a Squad Leader with the 9th Infantry Division, 2nd Battalion, 39th Infantry, A Company, on a reconnaissance in force mission in Khiem Ich District, Dinh Tuong Province, Vietnam. His occupation or speciality was Light Weapons Infantry.
During his time serving in Vietnam, Private First Class Moore distinguished himself by various actions on April 2, 1968, while serving as a Squad Leader. Private Moore was leading the point element when he arrived at the edge of a large canal which had to be crossed. Deploying his men along the near bank, Private Moore removed his equipment and swam to the opposite side. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private Moore then single handedly conducted a thorough reconnaissance of the far bank, in the process of killing one enemy soldier. Once he had completely secured the area, Private Moore returned to the water’s edge, directed the remainder of his squad safely across the canal and continued his mission. Private First Class Moore’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and the United States A Company.
